Welcome to the Health 2.0 NYC blog

You have probably seen the very popular meetup group pages but this is the permanent online home for the group, a place just to talk about ideas.

A little history:  Eugene Borukovich started this group back in 2008.  In 2010 he asked me (Alex) to help run it.  We created events like Pitch Yourself in the Shark Tank and others that attracted a diverse group of leaders, thinkers, and creators of innovation in healthcare.  The group has grown to over 1,300 members, most of whom are in New York.

Who we are: Our members a Entrepreneurs, Patient Advocates, Physicians, Administrators, IT folks, Marketers, Strategic Planners, Attorneys, Students, Designers, Bloggers, Programmers, and Investors.  When I look around a Health 2.0 event and speak to people I am impressed by two things: the equalizing nature of showing up at a meetup where you can have a world famous neurosurgeon chatting amiably with a rock star programmer - and neither knowing who the other is, and the passion of the individuals involved.  We all are coming to see, seek, and create the future of healthcare like an army of Lilliputians trying to capture the giant.  With clever tools, numbers, and drive, we are doing just that.

We welcome you to join our meetup group or browse through and discuss topics important to you.

Any Member is welcome to submit a blog post or to cross-post relevant material to this blog.  Please contact our communications leader, Andrea Spillman, MPH to do so.

Thank you for visiting today.  Please also find us in the following locations:

Hello Health 2.0 NYC!

This group was chartered over two years ago with the purpose of inspiring NYC's healthcare community to Connect, Create and Curetogether. Since then, Health 2.0 NYC has been a nexus for new ideas in healthcare, ideas that have turned into apps and startups, ideas that have pushed the envelope and found success, and now ideas that are reshaping health care. In the past we have hosted interactive discussions, product demonstrations, policy debates, and even panel discussions. The results have been deep understandings, new partnerships, and most of all, an active and engaged community of Health 2.0 leaders that is truly inspiring. None of this would have been possible without our dedicated member community - YOU!

Kicking off 2011 Right!
We would like to start 2011 by turning our innovative spirit on our own group. We proposed the Shark Tank idea and there was an overwhelming response, so we are doing it! This is a user generated event, so we thank you for your input and support, as always!

So without further adieu, we are happy to announce…

Pitch Yourself into the Shark Tank - The Health 2.0 / Angel-VC Matchmaking Event (aka "Connect, Create and Cure")

Health 2.0 NYC is pleased to announce our first ever healthcare startup / funding matchmaking event on January 19th @ VNSNY. While our group has been frequented by VCs, Angels, and other "Capital Injection Specialists", this is our first ever official panel that is intended to connect the entrepreneurs with those that fund their efforts. We also would like to welcome a special guest from the press! Center stage are the amazing start-ups we look forward to helping meet their Angel or VC match!

Meet Our Panelists:
Owen Davis, Managing Partner, NYC Seed - see a great interview here
Owen is currently Managing Director of NYC Seed, a seed stage venture capital fund in New York City. Owen has worked in all aspects of the online world, including work with early versions of AOL and MSN. He created one of the first 200 web sites on-line and founded Thinking Media in the summer of 1995, an online marketing firm which pioneered client-side tracking of pages and advertisements, which has become the standard method for online measurement. Owen also co-founded Sonata and Petal Computing, authored various patents in Internet methods and technologies, authored the book Instant Java Applets, and serves on many boards. Named various times as one of the 100 Top Internet Executives in New York by The Silicon Alley Reporter, Owen was also included as one of the 100 most influential people in Silicon Alley for 2008. He received his bachelor's degree from Brown University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Peter Flint, General Partner, Polaris Venture Partners (read his blog
Peter has over 25 years of experience as an operating executive in the consumer media industry combined with building senior management teams for early stage venture backed companies and seven years with Polaris. Prior to joining Polaris, Peter was a managing director with Ramsey Beirne Associates, the leading provider of executive searches to high growth, leading edge information technology companies. Peter has enjoyed a successful 15-year sales and marketing career in the cable television industry, initially with Showtime Entertainment and MTV Networks. He also worked with the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins to develop and launch the New England Sports Network. In addition, as vice president of Sales and Marketing for QVC Network, Peter directed a team to secure long-term distribution agreements with the nation’s largest cable companies, which was instrumental in the successful initial public offering. Peter was an early entrant in the interactive television marketplace as vice president of Video Jukebox Network, the company that built out the first nationally distributed, on-demand television network.

Maureen FarrellForbes.com
Maureen joined Forbes in August 2006 as a writer on entrepreneurship. Trying to put words and videos around the broad, misunderstood and frankly undercelebrated idea of entrepreneurship has forced me to conquer my fear of flying on a tiny air taxi ride; offered me the opportunity to eat ice cream for breakfast out of the first fresh vending machine to make freshly churned ice cream; and to watch a paraplegic woman learn to walk for the first time in 15 years with a robotic exoskeleton. I'm always on the lookout for entrepreneurs with big ideas trying to change the world, and hope to offer up examples of what forms of public policy and capital speed up innovation and entrepreneurship. Before joining Forbes, I covered bankruptcies and mergers and acquisitions for Debtwire and Mergermarket, both division of the Financial Times. I studied English literature and Art History at Duke University and got a one-year journalism crash course earning a Masters degree at Columbia University School of Journalism.

and our very own Michael Monson, Senior Vice President of Performance & Innovation, Visiting Nurse Services of New York

Format of the Event
Each start-up will get 5 minutes to cover 5 slides covering Mission, Model, Money, Team, and Tech. The Panel will get to ask a few quick questions too. Tweeted questions from the livecast will be visible on the screen as well (please use Hashtag #H2NYC.) Each will be voted on in these five categories and the winner will not only get a cash prize package, but a trip to the "Shark Tank". There the winner will get 5 more minutes to present and a panelist may actually make a 'take it or leave it' offer on the spot!

Call for Submissions
We ask that all interested start-ups submit your 5 slides + 1 title slide This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . All submissions will go to our panelists for selection, but only five can present. To see an example, please click here:Alex's Example. The deadline for submissions is January 3rd so get them in now!

Spread the Word!
Please pass this on to your friends, tweet and blog about it. Not every Health care Start-up in the Northeast knows about this event, let's make sure they do! If we get too many submission we will just have to do the event again!

We also want to thank our sponsor VNSNY (Visiting Nurse Service of New York) who is very gracious in providing the venue for this event and allows us to keep most events FREE of charge.

...so then why are you charging for this event?
We made an exception in this case to ensure a lower no show rate for this highly popular event and to provide the cash prize! Additional prize sponsors are welcome as well! Please contact Eugene Borukhovich or Alex Fair to discuss.

As always, thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing everyone. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email us.

Dear Health 2.0 NYC Members,

I apologize for such a delayed recap of the February meetup. But before I go onto the actual recap, I want t thank everyone for contributing ideas for the next meetups and voting on the topics of interest. As Lynn and I always say - it is your group so the influence and feedback we get drives the unprecedented (IMHO) discussionsand the success of our meetup.

Here are the top 3 ideas so please visit the meetup site to add and / or vote

Personal Health and Wellness Management

Social Media in healthcare

Leading Edge technology in healthcare?

Quick Recap

We tried Ustream.tv to extend our meetup virtually - each one will be embedded below individually but you can go to our Heath 2.0 NYC Show page to view them all at once.

ZocDoc @ Health 2.0 NYC Chapter

Karsten from ZocDoc seems to carry the same passion and enthusiasm as the founder (Cyrus) himself. ZocDoc is going strong with a very recent expansion to the West Coast and are actively hiring (for those who are looking please contact him on Twitter @KarstenV )

Almost 8 months ago, Health 2.0 Meetup hosted an ideation session on "Office Visit Dimensions" to identify the gaps that are seen by consumers as it pertains to their expereinces before, at and after the doctor's visit.

ZocDoc solves some of these problems and while they have the capacity to expand the feature set, the are treading wisely to focus on what they do best.

Meaningful Use, to Use or not to Use

People say that LinkedIn & Facebook are for people you know, Twitter is for people you want to know....  I started following @paulroemer on twitter and was immediately impressed by his wisdom in the #EHR, #EMR space, so when I asked him to speak on meaningful use and what this means to the healthcare ecosystem he immediately said yes. Paul came all the way from Pennsylvania, where he is a managing director for Healthcare IT Strategy. I am also happy to say that we inspired him and he now has a local Health 2.0 PA Chapter on meetup

Paul is a knowledgeable, dynamic, entertaining presenter that is not afraid to challenge the status qoe and hence we spent almost an hour between his presentation and the Q&A session. I almost felt bad doing a time check.

His slides and the presentations are below and please feel free to contact him if you need him at @paulroemer

Thank you all again for your participation and see you in a few weeks. Agenda TBD but we will try to get presenters to match the ideas that you all submitted.

Thanks again

We are geared for yet another great meetup so RSVP quickly :)
Our agenda will be a bit different this time around with only one company actually presenting their service - ZocDoc.

ZocDoc

ZocDoc has been around since 2007 and started making a difference for consumers right form the start. They kicked off the service starting with NYC. Karsten Vagner, Director of Communications, will present the platform, but also talk about their recent expansion to the West Coast.

Last meetup we briefly touched on the 576 page document from ONC and meaningful use, so the rest of the time we will spend on this topic. I could not think of anyone better to lead this discussion but Paul Roemer, managing partner of of the consulting firm Healthcare IT Strategy, based just outside of Philadelphia. His company's focus is helping large health care providers solve business problems by aligning their healthcare IT strategy around reform, EHR and Meaningful use. They assess EHRs, workflow improvement, and change management. Paul's focus is heath care transformation and problem resolution using a range of tools including; IT, strategy and solutions management. The AMA wrote about Paul that he is a person to watch, someone who is shaping the discussion about how to transform the business model of healthcare. Paul has a record of leveraging leadership expertise in P&L management, international business development, process reengineering, customer relationships and strategy design/execution to drive dynamic gains in revenue, profit, and performance in startup and mature environments. He has built three profitable consulting organizations, two for the Big 8, and have had his own firm for 14 years. He is a graduate of the Owen School at Vanderbilt University.

As you can imagine, we are very excited for Paul to lead a session around the topic that is near and dear to us all.

Agenda for February Meetup:
6:30 - 7:00pm Networking (Some healthy snacks and drinks)
7:00 - 7:20pm ZocDoc - Karten Vagner, Director of Communications
7:20 - 8:00pm Paul Roemer, Managing Partner, Healthcare IT Strategy

I am sure that we will run longer then 8 :)

See you in a few weeks

Thanks

Once again, we had a great turnout on a cold January day where 40+ of you gathered at PRNewswire

offices to welcome the New Year and discuss the topics that are so important to us all as healthcare consumers.

First of all I would like to thank PRNewswire for continuing their support and sponsorship of our meetup in 2010. If you have any press release needs please contact Laurie (Laurie.Wheeler at multiview.com).

Secondly, I would like to welcome Shauna to a role of a medical advisor for this growing group. Shauna, has actually been with us since we had 4 people in a small conference room by Penn Station and always provides us with valuable feedback with an eye of a clinician.

Shauna is an up -to-date Family Physician for over 10 years in the UK National Health Service where Primary Care is focused on preventive medicine and wellness, with GPs forming the foundation of Medical Professionals, serving the role of Gatekeeper.
Routine work involves patient-centered care, practicing evidence-based medicine, empowering patients to be actively and jointly involved in their health and wellbeing, and consciously apportioning the resources of the Govt. She is a Royal College Member, her Consultation skills and keen interest on clinical excellence, aiming for best outcomes for health and holistic approach to clinical practice allows her insights and experience to contribute to our Group on every level (as she has been for over a year)

January's meetup topic was "enabling better care by enabling clinical staff". Our healthcare system is swarming with inefficiencies, high costs and lack of transparency. While we are (or should be) the stewards of our own health, the clinical staff needs some help.

YourNurseIsOn

Our first presenter, Matthew Browning, who was a sponsor for HealthCampNYC, is a passionate and vocal person. His company YourNurseIsOn is completely focused on inefficiencies that exist in nurse scheduling. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, he saw a gap and a need to solve it.

We captured a short clip of Matthew and you can review his slides below.

OmniPACS

I had an MRI done just a few weeks ago - no worries - i will live! :) And as an engaged patient, I ran downstairs to request my images and in <30 min I had it, but boy would I love to get the images somewhere in the cloud for other radiologists to read it and collaborate together. Francisco & Chris from OmniPACS provide just that. While their main target market are radiology departments and not individual consumers, they are offering a piece of software - OmniPACS router that sits in the office but the rest is hands off. Instead of maintaining all the infrastructure and the headaches that come with it, OmniPACS provides all that in the cloud.

.
Our wonderful Lynn Nezin lead a session on healthcare resolutions for 2010. She did a great job bundling your contributions into the below slides.

See you all next month. Agenda and speakers to be announced soon
